Description
Original 1902 antique color lithographed map of the proposed canal route between Brito and Greytown, including the passage across Lake Nicaragua. The image area measures 19.6 x 31.5 cm [7¾" x 12½"], and topography is drawn in relief.
Numerous sailing ships are shown, in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as Lake Nicaragua.
Other named places and features include Lake Managua, the San Juan River, La Virgen, San Miguelito, Pueblo Nuevo, Fort San Carlos, Nandaime, Granada, and the Mombacho volcano.
The map also shows locks and a dam east of Brito, but the canal through Nicaragua was never built, thanks partly to the image of a volcano "in magnificent eruption" on one of the nation's postage stamps and the efforts of those who argued for building the canal through Panama instead.
This map is titled
Birds Eye View of the Maritime Canal of Nicaragua
and was published by George Franklin Cram, Chicago in 1902.
